Why Vote?

why vote

In a society where it seems anything goes, sometimes Christians can feel like there is no point in voting. Looking around at the contending parties, we do not see many if any that reflect what we believe, and the ones that may, seem too little to make a difference. So what should we do?

In Proverbs 29:2 it reads "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan." The word here for groan is the Hebrew word 'anach' meaning to mourn, gasp, groan in pain or grief or sigh. It makes sense then, that we as a people vote to get the 'righteous' or the party who most upholds our values into authority.

In Deuteronomy 1:13 it says, "Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you." Again we are being advised to weigh up those who should rule. But how do we do that?

Go back to bible basics. Write down what is acceptable to God and compare that with what our current society says is acceptable. Are there any parties willing to stand up against these issues? Are there any parties who will not let our morals slip further? Are there any laws that need to be changed in order to allow us to live at peace with what we believe as Christians (e.g. Anti-smacking law), which parties support the changing of any of these laws?

I am not going to tell you who to vote for, but I do suggest that you do not just wing it or stay at home. This is serious, it is vital for the health of our nation. If you would like to see where some of the parties currently stand click here to view key issues.

Have you heard the saying if you don't vote, don't complain? It is a valid point. If you have not done anything to try and elect someone to represent your values, then you really have no place to stand and ridicule the ruling powers.

God expects us to respect our ruling governments and it makes it much easier to do this if they represent Christianity rather than oppose it.

DO NOT sit out this vote. Enroll to vote now (or check your details are up to date). You must be enrolled by the 22nd of September. If you have moved house since the last elections you will have to update your enrollment details. Your voice is important, you speak for those who don't know the truth and don't know any better. I believe if you don't speak, then God will hold you accountable and ask you why.
